Clinical Expertise

A reputed laparoscopic colorectal surgeon, Professor Haray has won several awards which include, “Best Hospital Doctor (Surgery) in the UK” and “Best Surgical Trainer in Wales”. He has been conferred the prestigious title of Fellow of the Faculty of Surgical Trainers by the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. This, combined with an active interest in surgical research and teaching, with over a hundred publications/ presentations, means he is a regular speaker invited to various National and International conferences.

Professor Haray established a laparoscopic service at the Prince Charles Hospital initially for cholecystectomy in 1997 and then for colorectal surgery in 1998. At a time when there was little structured training available in the UK, he took the initiative to obtain training by attending various workshops and seminars in Europe and the USA. Prior to his appointment as a consultant, he was a visiting fellow at the Cleveland Clinic in the USA which was, at that time, one of the pioneering centres for laparoscopic colorectal surgery.865splashscreen1

Since 1998, there has been a cautious and steady increase in the numbers of laparoscopic colorectal cases that Professor Haray has carried out per year.
In the last 12 months, this has now reached over 100 cases per year. The total number of laparoscopic colorectal cases Professor Haray has dealt with is >1000. In particular, the number of Resections for Cancer dealt with is >800.
The case mix covers malignant pathology, inflammatory bowel disease as well as functional indications, and includes the full range from segmental resections, total colectomies, restorative proctocolectomy with ileal pouch, etc.

Preceptorship Experience in Laparoscopic Colorectal Surgery
Prof Haray has been preceptoring other consultant surgeons in the UK since 2008. He conducts demonstration ‘Masterclasses’ to visiting consultant surgeons and their surgical teams at Prince Charles Hospital and subsequently operates several cases with them at their base hospitals to provide onsite Preceptorship.
• Registered Preceptor for Laparoscopic Colorectal Surgery, Association of Laparoscopic Surgery at the Royal College of Surgeons.
• On the faculty of the European Surgical Institute, Hamburg for Laparoscopic Colorectal Surgery courses.
• Masterclasses: Conducted several Masterclasses for visiting consultant surgeons wishing to learn Laparoscopic Colorectal Surgery as well as many Live video linked surgical demonstrations to audiences comprising Consultants, Surgical Registrars, Junior Doctors, Medical Students, Nurses etc.
• Registered Preceptor with Ethicon Endosurgery® Ltd.
• Preceptorship provided to more than 19 consultant surgeons from 7 hospitals across Wales.

Team Building Activities
Prof Haray has established an Alumni Association for all present and past staff of the colorectal surgery department and hosts an annual dinner.
Members of the Team meet regularly socially outside of the hospital to foster team spirit.
The multidisciplinary colorectal team at Prince Charles Hospital has won several awards and recognition both locally and nationally.
